Pink Beach: Where Coral Meets the Shore

Overview

Pink Beach sits along the coastline of Komodo Island and is one of the park’s most popular stops for snorkeling, named for the distinct pink tint visible in its sand. It is a beach stop rather than a separate island, and is commonly paired with a dragon-viewing walk or Padar’s viewpoint on the same day.

Why the Sand Looks Pink

The pink coloring comes from tiny fragments of red coral (Foraminifera and coral debris) mixed into the white sand, most visible up close or when the sand is wet. The effect varies with light and how recently the beach has been walked on, and it is less pronounced from a distance than in close-up photographs.

Snorkeling and the Reef

The reef just offshore is the main draw for many visitors, with coral formations and a range of reef fish visible in shallow, generally calm water close to shore. As with reef areas throughout the park, avoid standing on or touching coral, which is fragile and slow-growing.
