Sources and Methodology

Where our wildlife and conservation information comes from, and how we treat information that changes.

Priority Source Types

For wildlife, conservation and ecological claims, we prioritize:

  • The IUCN Red List species assessments
  • The UNESCO World Heritage Centre’s entry for Komodo National Park
  • Indonesian conservation authorities and official park sources
  • Peer-reviewed research published in academic journals
  • Recognized academic institutions studying Varanus komodoensis

For transportation and logistics claims specific to a provider — such as flight or ferry schedules — we point to the official provider directly rather than restating figures that can go out of date.

What We Avoid

We do not build wildlife claims on random low-quality blogs, unverified social media posts, or secondhand travel-blog summaries. Where a claim cannot be traced to a credible source, we either omit it or frame it explicitly as general or uncertain rather than presenting it as settled fact.

Original Content, Not Copied Wording

Even where we draw on the sources above for facts, our articles are written and structured independently. We do not copy source wording, and our long-form wildlife pieces — including our guide to the Komodo dragon breeding cycle — are built as original, comprehensive treatments of their topic rather than summaries of a single existing article.

How We Handle Numbers

Population estimates, prices, fees and schedules are the categories most likely to change or be reported differently across sources. Rather than presenting a single figure as fixed, we either omit precise numbers we cannot verify at publication time or note that readers should confirm current figures with an authoritative source before relying on them.

Review Process

Content is reviewed before publication for accuracy against the source types listed above, and revisited when a reader flags a possible error through the contact page. See our Editorial Policy for the broader standards this sits within.
